The Borno State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on drug-related crimes, arresting eight suspects during a targeted anti-drug operation in parts of Maiduguri, the state capital.
The raid, carried out by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Anti-Social Vices Unit, took place in the Bulumkutu and Dala areas of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC), leading to the recovery of suspected illicit substances and the apprehension of individuals allegedly involved in drug abuse and trafficking.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the operation was conducted on June 1, 2026, following directives from the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, to intensify efforts against drug abuse, illicit drug distribution, and other social vices across the state.
The police said the operation was part of an ongoing campaign aimed at sanitising communities and curbing criminal activities often linked to drug abuse.
During the raid, officers recovered 46 capsules of Tramadol, 12 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, and two D5 tablets from the suspects.
The Command disclosed that all eight suspects have been charged to court, while the recovered exhibits have been tendered as evidence for prosecution.
Police authorities described the operation as another significant breakthrough in the fight against substance abuse and criminality, stressing that drug-related offences remain a major concern due to their connection with violent crimes and other anti-social behaviours.
The Commissioner of Police reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to sustaining aggressive operations against criminal elements and ensuring that communities across Borno State remain safe and secure.
The Command also appealed to residents to continue supporting law enforcement agencies with timely and credible information that could assist in identifying drug peddlers, criminal hideouts, and other threats to public safety.
Security experts have repeatedly warned that tackling drug abuse remains critical to addressing broader security challenges, particularly among youths vulnerable to criminal exploitation.
The latest arrests underscore the Borno Police Command’s determination to dismantle drug networks and rid communities of activities capable of undermining peace and security in the state.
