The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on violent crimes with the arrest of a suspected armed robber and recovery of weapons and charms during a late-night operation in Midim Clan, Abak Local Government Area.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, operatives of the command acted on credible intelligence received at about 3:00 a.m. regarding a notorious gang known for attacking and robbing commercial motorcycle operators at gunpoint within Midim Clan and surrounding communities.
Police operatives swiftly stormed the suspects’ hideout in a coordinated raid, forcing members of the gang to flee into nearby bushes on sighting the security team.
One of the suspects, identified as Uduak Vincent, 28, a native of Ikot Ifang Village in Midim Clan, was successfully chased down and arrested during the operation.
Items recovered from the suspect included a locally made pistol, a small axe, a knife, charms suspected to be used for criminal fortification, six wraps of substance believed to be Indian hemp, two button phones, three bottles of “ICE,” three rings, an Airtel SIM card, and a multi-coloured handbag.
Police authorities disclosed that two other members of the gang escaped during the raid, adding that intensive manhunt operations are currently underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, reaffirmed the command’s resolve to rid Akwa Ibom State of criminal elements and warned violent offenders to either abandon crime or face decisive police action.
The command also called on residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information, assuring that all intelligence provided by members of the public would be treated with strict confidentiality.
