A major security scare was narrowly avoided in Akwa Ibom State as the Nigeria Police Force intercepted and neutralised dangerous explosive devices near a correctional facility in Ikot Ekpene.
Acting on urgent intelligence from the Nigerian Correctional Service, Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare swiftly deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit alongside tactical teams to secure the area.
A meticulous sweep around the custodial centre led to the shocking discovery of two 90mm high explosive rounds, a burning fuse, and several tools suspected to be linked to a planned attack.
Security experts say the devices were professionally rendered safe on-site, effectively neutralising what could have resulted in catastrophic loss of lives and destruction of critical infrastructure.
Authorities have since tightened security around the facility, ramping up surveillance and patrols to prevent any further threats.
Police confirmed that investigations are underway to trace the origin of the explosives and apprehend those behind the plot.
Reassuring residents, the command said the situation is fully under control with no casualties recorded, while issuing a stern warning to criminal elements that Akwa Ibom remains a hostile ground for any act that threatens public safety.
