The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has intensified its clampdown on illegal mining activities, arresting a 34-year-old man identified as a principal suspect and recovering suspected titanium ore, popularly known as “black sand,” from mining sites in Ibeno Local Government Area.
The operation, carried out on Monday, September 28, 2026, followed the Command’s renewed campaign against illegal mining and the exploitation of the state’s mineral resources.
Police operatives stormed suspected illegal mining locations at Okorutip, Atia and Ndito Ekaiba coastal villages in Ibeno at about 11:00 a.m., leading to the arrest of James John, popularly known as “Kpoi,” of Itak Ifaha Village.
The Command said John was identified as one of the principal suspects allegedly involved in illegal mining activities in the area.
Other individuals found at the mining locations reportedly fled when they sighted the police team. The Command said efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Among the materials recovered from the sites were bags containing a mineral substance suspected to be titanium ore, commonly referred to as black sand.
The recovered substance has been secured and would undergo appropriate laboratory examination and verification as investigations continue.
The Police said the operation forms part of a wider strategy aimed at dismantling networks involved in the illegal extraction, processing, storage and movement of mineral resources across Akwa Ibom.
According to the Command, its investigation is not limited to persons physically found at mining locations, but is also focused on uncovering individuals and groups allegedly financing, coordinating and facilitating the illegal activities.
The Police further warned sponsors, financiers, collaborators and operators of illegal mining activities to immediately stop their operations or face prosecution.
The Command said it would continue to collaborate with relevant regulatory agencies, sister security organisations, traditional institutions and residents to detect and disrupt illegal mining activities, particularly in coastal communities.
Residents of communities affected by illegal mining were also urged to provide credible information to the Police and other appropriate authorities, with assurances that such information would be treated confidentially.
The Police Command said the crackdown is aimed at protecting lives and property, preserving the environment and safeguarding Akwa Ibom’s mineral resources from unlawful exploitation.
