The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a social media user accused of spreading fear and panic through a viral post containing a purported security threat, warning that those behind false security alarms will face prosecution.
The suspect, identified as Akaninyene Udo, popularly known online as “AK Philo,” was apprehended following investigations into a controversial post that read, “Eket get ready for us,” accompanied by the image of an armed bandit.
According to the police, the post triggered widespread anxiety among residents of Eket and surrounding communities, prompting swift action by security operatives.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Command reassured residents that Akwa Ibom remains peaceful and secure, stressing that there is no imminent security threat anywhere in the state.
Police spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, said investigations into the matter have been concluded and the suspect will soon be arraigned in court. She added that efforts are ongoing to track down other individuals who may have been involved in creating or circulating the alarming content.
The Command cautioned members of the public against sharing unverified security information, fake news, or misleading reports capable of causing public unrest, noting that such actions constitute criminal offences under the law.
Residents were urged to verify security-related information through official channels and credible sources before forwarding messages on social media.
The police further encouraged citizens to remain calm, law-abiding, and vigilant while reporting suspicious activities to security agencies, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining peace, security, and stability across Akwa Ibom State.
