The Commissioner of Police, Gombe State Command, CP Umar Ahmed Chuso, has assured residents of the state of the Command’s readiness to take decisive action against criminal activities and other social vices capable of threatening peace and security.

CP Chuso gave the assurance while addressing stakeholders during the 2026 Police Customer Service Week celebration held at the Gombe State Police Headquarters.

The celebration, organised under the theme “Going the Extra Mile,” brought together representatives of government, traditional institutions, religious organisations, civil society groups, transport unions, trade associations, youth organisations and other members of the community.

The event provided an opportunity for the Police Command to interact with members of the public, appreciate their continued support and cooperation, and discuss ways of improving police service delivery and strengthening community-police relations.

CP Chuso expressed appreciation to the people of Gombe State for their cooperation and support, saying effective policing could only be achieved through a strong partnership between the Police and the communities they serve.

He assured stakeholders that the Command would continue to take appropriate action against criminal elements and anyone whose activities could undermine public safety.

The Commissioner also spoke on concerns surrounding the conduct of officers at the divisional level, stressing that Divisional Police Officers would be held accountable for their responsibilities.

He said the Command would not tolerate any officer whose conduct compromises the security of the people or undermines public confidence in the Police.

CP Chuso urged members of the public to continue providing credible information to the Police, assuring them that such information would assist the Command in preventing crime and responding effectively to security challenges.

Also speaking, the Gombe State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Adamu Dishi Kupto, commended police officers and other security personnel for their efforts in maintaining peace, harmony and unity in the state.

He said the Gombe State Government had put in place various mechanisms to ensure the safety of lives and property, assuring residents that the government would continue to support security agencies in the discharge of their responsibilities.

The Secretary of Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, Saleh Danburam, assured the Police Command that JNI and other Islamic organisations would continue to promote peaceful coexistence and support initiatives aimed at sustaining peace and development in Gombe State.

Representing the Gombe State Ministry of Justice, the Deputy Director of Drafting, David Yohanna, expressed support for efforts to strengthen the rule of law and improve security and justice delivery.

The Chairman of Civil Society Organisations, Ibrahim Yusuf, also commended the Police Command for its efforts towards maintaining peace and protecting lives and property.

Similarly, the Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee, PCRC, Gombe State, Ubale Garba, applauded the opening of the new Gwani Police Division in Yamaltu-Deba Local Government Area.

He described the development as a step towards improving police presence and security coverage in the area, while appealing to the Police Command to consider establishing another police division in Kashere.

Representatives of transport unions and other associations, including the Chairman of RTEN/NURTW, Muhammad Buhari Usman, Bappah Saboda Kokakola of the trade association, Chairman of Achaba Riders Kabiru Jafaru and representatives of Keke NAPEP operators, also expressed their support for the Police Command.

However, the Chairman of Youth O’Clock, Gombe State, Abdulaziz Sani Labaran, raised concerns over the deployment of police officers as escorts to politicians, particularly during political campaigns.

He observed that excessive deployment of police personnel for political escort duties could reduce the number of officers available for community policing and the protection of the general public.

Labaran also raised concerns over reports of suspected political thugs, popularly referred to as “Kalare,” allegedly accompanying some politicians during political activities, with some reportedly carrying weapons.

He called on the Police Command to ensure that anyone found carrying weapons unlawfully is dealt with in accordance with the law, irrespective of political affiliation.

He further appealed to the Commissioner of Police to ensure adequate deployment of officers to communities and other public places, especially during political activities, to maintain law and order and protect residents.

Representing the District Head of Gombe, the District Head of Jalo Waziri, Alhaji Sammani Bappah Yerima, commended CP Umar Ahmed Chuso for his determination and courage in tackling security challenges in the state.

He assured the Police Command of the continued support and cooperation of traditional rulers, stressing the importance of collaboration between traditional institutions, the Police and communities in maintaining peace.

Alhaji Sammani Bappah Yerima also called on parents to take greater responsibility for the upbringing of their children and discourage them from engaging in activities that could threaten peace and security.

The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Police Command and the Gombe State Government in sustaining peace, security, unity and development across the state.

The 2026 Police Customer Service Week celebration therefore served as a platform for renewed engagement between the Police and the public, with stakeholders emphasising the need for professionalism, accountability, effective community policing and stronger cooperation in the fight against crime.
