The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has declared a renewed offensive against cyber-related offences, warning that individuals who use social media to spread falsehoods, defame others or engage in cyberstalking will be tracked down and prosecuted.
The warning came as the Command confirmed the arrest of a suspect over allegations of criminal defamation and cyberstalking following a petition submitted by former Senator Effiong Bob.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the petition, dated June 17, 2026, was filed on behalf of the former senator by Samuel Ikpo & Company Chambers.
The petition alleged that Mr. Ewa Okpo published and circulated videos and other materials on his social media platforms containing statements said to be false, malicious and defamatory, with the intent to damage the reputation and integrity of the petitioner.
The police said the petition was promptly acted upon in line with constitutional and statutory provisions, leading to the suspect’s arrest. The Command disclosed that the suspect is currently in lawful custody and assisting investigators.
While stressing that investigations are ongoing, the police cautioned that freedom of expression guaranteed under the Constitution does not extend to the publication of false information, cyberbullying, criminal defamation or other unlawful online activities.
“The era when people believed they could commit offences in cyberspace without consequences is over,” the Command stated, adding that the Nigeria Police Force has the legal authority and technological capability to identify, trace, investigate and prosecute offenders regardless of where the offensive content originates.
The Command further warned that individuals who knowingly repost, endorse or amplify false and malicious online publications could also face criminal liability if investigations establish their involvement.
According to the statement, the investigation is being conducted professionally, impartially and in accordance with the Constitution and other extant laws, while the rights of all parties involved are being respected.
The police assured that anyone found culpable at the conclusion of the investigation would be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction, insisting that the Command would not be swayed by public pressure, media trials or attempts to obstruct justice.
The Command also urged Nigerians to exercise restraint and responsibility in their use of social media, reminding users that every online publication should be guided by truth, decency and respect for the rights and reputation of others.
Reaffirming its commitment to upholding the rule of law, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command said it would continue to ensure that every individual who violates the law, whether online or offline, is brought to justice through due process.
