The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested three men following a reported disturbance linked to masquerade activities along Mbak Akpan Ekpenyong.
The incident occurred on August 31, 2026, at about 5:52 p.m., when the Command received a distress call over activities involving a masquerade in the area.
Responding swiftly, police operatives were deployed to the location to prevent the situation from escalating and restore calm.
On arrival, the officers arrested three male suspects identified as Uwakmfon Sunday, Edidiong Jackson and Sunday Tom.
According to the Police Command, several other participants fled the scene immediately after sighting the security operatives.
Police also recovered masquerade regalia allegedly found in the possession of the arrested suspects. The items have been taken into custody as exhibits as investigations continue.
The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, commended the officers for their prompt response and professional handling of the situation.
Azare warned individuals and groups against using cultural or traditional activities as a cover for violence, intimidation, disorder or other unlawful acts.
He stressed that the Command would not allow any person or group to threaten the peace and security of residents across the state.
The police commissioner, however, clarified that the Command respects legitimate cultural and traditional practices, noting that its concern is to ensure that such activities are conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law.
He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements, threats or activities capable of disrupting public peace to the nearest police station or through designated emergency channels.
The Command assured residents that it would continue to respond promptly to distress calls and intelligence reports in its determination to safeguard lives and property across Akwa Ibom.
