Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd.), has highlighted the need to strengthen the Nigeria Police Force, saying security personnel who have spent considerable time on demanding operations also deserve rest and time with their families.
Musa made the remarks while stressing the importance of empowering the police to take greater responsibility in addressing the country’s security challenges.
According to the minister, security personnel have continued to shoulder demanding responsibilities, making it necessary to provide them with adequate support and strengthen other security institutions.
“All my men are already tired, they need rest and need to see their families. We need to empower the police to do their job now,” Musa said.
The former Chief of Defence Staff’s comments point to the need for a stronger and better-equipped police force capable of handling internal security responsibilities and reducing the burden on the military.
His remarks also underscore the importance of effective collaboration among security agencies, improved operational capacity, adequate equipment and personnel welfare in tackling insecurity across the country.
The call comes amid ongoing discussions about the roles of the military and police in maintaining law and order, particularly in communities affected by banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and other security threats.
Musa’s position highlights the importance of building a police force with the necessary manpower, resources and operational capacity to respond effectively to emerging security challenges while allowing military personnel to concentrate on their core responsibilities.
The minister maintained that empowering the police is essential to strengthening Nigeria’s overall security architecture.
