The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has raised concerns over the growing loss of police personnel in the line of duty, lamenting the inadequate equipment and operational challenges confronting officers battling insecurity across the country.
Disu made the remarks while addressing the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), highlighting the difficult conditions under which police officers continue to discharge their responsibilities despite limited operational resources.
“Everyday policemen are dying, we don’t have the equipment to do this job, but we are still doing it,” the IGP said.
His statement underscores the mounting pressure on security personnel, particularly police officers who are frequently exposed to dangerous situations while confronting criminal elements and maintaining law and order.
The police chief’s remarks also draw attention to the urgent need for improved operational capacity, modern equipment, adequate protection and better welfare packages for personnel risking their lives to safeguard citizens.
The appeal comes amid renewed calls for stronger collaboration between the police and other security agencies to tackle the country’s security challenges.
Disu’s concerns highlight the sacrifices made by officers on the front lines and the importance of providing them with the necessary tools, resources and institutional support to perform their duties effectively.
The IGP’s message to the Defence Minister is a reminder that those entrusted with protecting Nigerians also need protection, adequate equipment and the support required to return safely to their families after every operation.
