The National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Titus Audu Amba, has described Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, as a source of pride to teachers across Nigeria, saying his emergence as governor demonstrates the leadership, discipline and sense of responsibility associated with the teaching profession.
Amba made the commendation when he received the Kebbi State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK, alongside members of the state media team, during a courtesy visit to the NUT National Secretariat.
According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yahaya Sarki, the NUT President recalled Governor Idris’ remarkable journey from the classroom and teachers’ union to the highest levels of leadership.
He noted that Idris served as Branch Chairman and Kebbi State Chairman of the NUT before rising to become National Treasurer, Vice President and National President of the union. He also served as Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
Amba said the governor had earned the confidence of teachers and organised labour long before becoming governor because of his track record as a teacher, unionist and labour leader.
He said the confidence had been reinforced by what he described as visible developments recorded across Kebbi State under the Idris administration.
The NUT president particularly cited investments in road infrastructure, education, healthcare, workers’ welfare, street lighting and other critical sectors, saying teachers and union members who had visited Kebbi before and after the governor assumed office could personally attest to the changes.
He also commended Governor Idris for what he described as his hands-on approach to governance and personal monitoring of development projects.
Amba said several of the projects and interventions being executed by the administration were visible and verifiable, adding that the governor’s background in the teaching profession had remained an important part of his leadership identity.
Earlier, Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK, said the delegation’s visit was part of efforts by the Kebbi State Government’s media team to showcase the achievements of the administration and draw greater national and international attention to the state.
The commissioner said the administration had recorded interventions in key sectors, including education, healthcare, security, agriculture, workers’ welfare and solid minerals development.
He disclosed that the establishment of the Ministry of Solid Minerals and the Kebbi State Solid Minerals Development Commission had opened fresh opportunities for investment in the state’s mineral resources.
According to him, companies from countries including China, Indonesia, India and Brazil had expressed interest in Kebbi’s mineral resources, particularly lithium.
Ahmed also highlighted the recruitment of teachers, construction and renovation of schools, payment of the new national minimum wage of ₦75,000, as well as the expansion and upgrading of healthcare facilities across the state.
He said the engagement with the NUT was also aimed at strengthening the relationship between the Kebbi State Government and the teachers’ union, while promoting greater collaboration on education development and teachers’ welfare.
The meeting further provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss ways of deepening cooperation in support of teachers and the education sector, with the NUT leadership acknowledging the importance of sustained investment in the profession.
