Former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, has argued that Nigeria’s persistent insecurity is driven by incompetence in leadership rather than the ethnic background of those occupying public offices.
Daura said the country’s security challenges stem from the appointment of individuals who lack the capacity, expertise or competence to effectively discharge their responsibilities.
According to the former intelligence chief, many underperforming officials remain in office because they enjoy the protection and backing of the political leadership, making them immune from scrutiny and accountability.
He maintained that instead of exposing failures and replacing ineffective officials, political authorities often shield them, allowing inefficiency to persist and worsen the nation’s security situation.
Daura stressed that the debate over ethnicity distracts from the real issue, insisting that Nigeria needs capable and accountable leaders in key security positions if it is to overcome banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and other criminal threats.
He urged authorities to prioritise competence, professionalism and accountability in appointments, arguing that effective leadership—not tribal considerations—is the key to addressing the country’s security crisis.
