Nigeria has declared that it has no nuclear weapons and is not pursuing any programme involving weapons of mass destruction, reaffirming its long-standing support for a world free of nuclear arms.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, made the position known while addressing the 108th Plenary Meeting of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Ibrahim said Nigeria’s nuclear policy remained strictly focused on peaceful applications of nuclear technology, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to global nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
He explained that nuclear-related activities in Nigeria were supervised by the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, with the country’s efforts directed towards peaceful and developmental purposes rather than military applications.
According to the envoy, Nigeria remains actively engaged with other nations and international organisations in the campaign to eliminate nuclear weapons and prevent their proliferation.
He called for stronger international mechanisms to deter countries from conducting nuclear weapons tests, including a review of relevant provisions of the United Nations Charter.
Ibrahim stressed that the issue was particularly important to Africa, which has consistently maintained its status as a nuclear-weapon-free zone.
He said preventing the spread of nuclear weapons was critical to preserving peace and security on the continent and beyond.
The ambassador spoke as the international community marked 30 years of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), a major global framework designed to prohibit nuclear weapon test explosions and other nuclear explosions.
He said Nigeria would continue to support initiatives promoting nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation and the responsible, peaceful use of nuclear technology.
Ibrahim maintained that lasting global security could only be achieved through collective action, insisting that nations must work together to prevent both the spread and testing of nuclear weapons.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to international efforts aimed at building a safer world where nuclear technology is harnessed for development rather than destruction.
