The tournament, held at Government College Maiduguri, kicked off with an exciting football match between Government Day Secondary School Mairi and Government College Maiduguri. Six secondary schools from across the state’s senatorial zones are competing in five sports: football, basketball, lawn tennis, table tennis, and athletics.

According to Ibrahim Lawan, a consultant for the event, the tournament seeks to revive the rich tradition of school sports in the region. He further noted that top performers will be considered for scholarships and additional educational opportunities.

The participating schools were provided with modern sporting gear, including football boots, track suits, jerseys, and equipment for athletics.

Speaking at the event, Hajiya Amina Maibe, the Acting Coordinator of the NEDC Borno State Office, commended the efforts of the game masters and organizers. She highlighted the power of sports in uniting young people and empowering them beyond cultural, linguistic, or religious divides.

Maibe also raised concerns about the number of out-of-school youths engaged in the games, urging the NEDC to take further steps in ensuring school enrolment for all youths. She added that scholarships and other incentives would be offered to motivate students to prioritize their education.

The opening match concluded with a 1-0 victory for Government Day Secondary School Mairi. This marks the second edition of the tournament.
