The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Yobe State Chapter, has elected Zulai Salisu of Radio Nigeria Sunshine FM as its new Chairperson, ushering in a fresh three-year leadership for the association.
Salisu emerged victorious at the election held in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, after securing an overwhelming 47 votes, while her opponent, Rebecca Luka of the Information Chapel, polled three votes.
The newly elected chairperson, in her acceptance speech, expressed appreciation to members for entrusting her with the leadership of the association, promising to consolidate on the achievements recorded by the previous administration.
She described the mandate as both an honour and a responsibility, stressing that her administration would work towards strengthening NAWOJ and advancing the welfare and professional interests of women journalists across the state.
Salisu also commended the Yobe State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) for providing the necessary support that enabled the election to take place in a peaceful, transparent and credible manner in accordance with the association’s constitution.
The new NAWOJ boss praised Governor Mai Mala Buni for what she described as his contributions to the development of Yobe State, particularly his relationship with the media, describing him as a “friend of the media.”
She urged Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), government institutions and other stakeholders to regard journalists as partners in development and create an enabling environment for effective reporting.
According to her, stronger collaboration between the media and relevant institutions would help promote accountability, development and better communication with the people of Yobe State.
Other members elected into the new executive include Hauwa Hassan of Yobe Television, Vice Chairperson; Murjanatu Hamisu Yalwa of Sahel Treasure, Secretary; Bintu Alhaji Larema of Yobe Broadcasting Corporation, Assistant Secretary; Halima Usman of NTA, Treasurer; Kaltum Jarma of Yobe Television, Financial Secretary; and Aisha Muhammad Saleh of NTA, Auditor.
The new executive is expected to steer the affairs of NAWOJ Yobe for the next three years.
