Leaders across all sectors of Nigeria’s economy, particularly those in public office, have been urged to embrace the values of transparency, integrity, accountability, and modest living exemplified by Nigeria’s late President, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
The call was made by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Edo State, Prof. Roland Otaru (SAN), who described the late Nigerian leader as one of the nation’s most credible and selfless presidents whose legacy remains relevant in the country’s democratic journey.
Prof. Otaru stated that Nigeria’s leadership challenges could be significantly reduced if present and future leaders adopted Yar’Adua’s culture of honesty, humility, and respect for the rule of law.
Speaking during a public lecture in Benin City, the Edo State capital, Otaru noted that Yar’Adua distinguished himself in office through uncommon transparency and a commitment to good governance at a time when Nigerians yearned for accountable leadership.
According to him, the late president’s lifestyle and approach to governance stood in sharp contrast to the growing culture of extravagance and abuse of public trust often associated with leadership positions in the country.
“President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua remains one of the finest examples of transparent and people-oriented leadership in Nigeria’s history. He lived a simple life, governed with sincerity, and placed national interest above personal ambition,” Otaru said.
He stressed that leadership should not be seen as an avenue for personal enrichment, but rather as a responsibility to serve the people with honesty and dedication.
The senior lawyer lamented that corruption, lack of accountability, and excessive display of wealth by some public office holders had continued to erode public confidence in governance and democratic institutions.
He said the country’s political and economic development would remain slow unless leaders at all levels embraced ethical standards and accountability in the management of public resources.
Otaru recalled that Yar’Adua openly declared his assets while in office and consistently promoted the rule of law, adding that such actions earned him widespread respect both within and outside Nigeria.
He further noted that the late president demonstrated rare courage by acknowledging flaws in the electoral process that brought him to power and initiated reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
“His commitment to electoral reforms and the rule of law showed that he was more interested in building strong institutions than protecting personal political interests,” he added.
The Edo Attorney-General urged political office holders, business executives, civil servants, and community leaders to prioritize integrity and service to humanity above material acquisition.
According to him, Nigeria’s future depends largely on the quality of leadership provided by those entrusted with authority in both public and private sectors.
He warned that leadership without integrity would continue to fuel poverty, insecurity, unemployment, and social unrest across the country.
Otaru also called on young Nigerians aspiring to leadership positions to study the lives of past leaders who governed with discipline, patriotism, and accountability.
He described Yar’Adua as a leader who understood the pains of ordinary Nigerians and sought practical solutions to national challenges despite health difficulties during his administration.
The legal scholar noted that the late president’s calm disposition, respect for democratic principles, and willingness to listen to opposing views contributed greatly to political stability during his tenure.
He said leaders must learn to place public welfare above selfish interests if Nigeria is to achieve sustainable development and national unity.
“Leadership is about sacrifice, honesty, and commitment to the people. Yar’Adua demonstrated these virtues throughout his public service career, and that is why many Nigerians still remember him with admiration today,” Otaru stated.
He further urged Nigerians to hold leaders accountable and continue demanding transparency in governance, saying citizens also have a responsibility to protect democratic values.
According to him, national transformation cannot be achieved by government alone, stressing that collective responsibility and ethical conduct are essential for building a better society.
The Attorney-General maintained that the lessons from Yar’Adua’s leadership style should serve as a moral guide for public office holders and future generations.
Observers at the event described the remarks as timely, especially at a period when Nigerians are increasingly demanding accountability, prudent management of public funds, and people-focused governance.
Some participants noted that the late president’s reputation for humility and honesty remains one of the reasons many Nigerians continue to regard him as a symbol of responsible leadership.
Yar’Adua, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2007 until his death in 2010, was widely known for his Seven-Point Agenda and commitment to constitutional order and due process.
Though his administration was cut short by illness, political analysts believe his emphasis on transparency and institutional reforms left a lasting impression on the country’s democratic system.
The event ended with renewed calls for leaders at all levels to adopt policies and lifestyles that reflect accountability, discipline, and genuine concern for the welfare of citizens.
Participants agreed that Nigeria’s progress depends not only on economic policies and political promises, but also on the character, integrity, and sincerity of those entrusted with leadership responsibilities.
