The Kebbi State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on unregistered vehicles and motorists using concealed or altered number plates, recording a major breakthrough with the recovery of a stolen Mercedes Benz and the arrest of a suspected vehicle thief.
The operation, carried out in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police to enhance public safety and curb criminal activities, underscores the Command’s renewed resolve to deny criminals the use of untraceable vehicles across the state.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, operatives acting on credible intelligence received through the Command’s emergency communication channels tracked down a gold-coloured Mercedes Benz C200 (2009 model) that had been reported stolen.
The luxury vehicle was recovered at the Bayan Kara area of Birnin Kebbi, where officers arrested one suspect, Ahmed Sa’adu. Another suspect, identified as Kasimu Bunza, is currently on the run, while tools believed to have been used in carrying out the theft were also recovered during the operation.
Police investigations revealed that the vehicle belongs to Abdulaziz Abubakar Sadik of Sokoto State and had been stolen before the swift intervention of security operatives led to its recovery.
The arrested suspect remains in police custody as detectives intensify efforts to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the crime and apprehend all individuals linked to the theft.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the Command warned that vehicles operating without valid registration plates, as well as those with concealed, defaced, altered or obstructed number plates, will face strict legal sanctions.
The police noted that proper vehicle registration remains a critical tool in crime prevention, stressing that criminal elements often exploit unregistered vehicles to evade detection while carrying out unlawful activities.
Commissioner of Police in the state assured residents that intelligence-driven operations would continue across Kebbi to protect lives and property, urging members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to security agencies.
The latest recovery is being viewed as another significant success in the Command’s ongoing campaign to rid Kebbi of criminal elements and strengthen security across the state.
