BIRNIN KEBBI, August 10, 2026 — Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare and transforming healthcare delivery across the state.
The governor made the pledge while speaking at the First Health Workers Convention held in Birnin Kebbi, where he assured health workers and organised labour that their welfare would remain a major priority of his administration.
Governor Idris said his government had, since assuming office, taken deliberate steps to tackle unemployment among young graduates despite existing restrictions on recruitment.
According to him, the administration has so far employed 5,166 workers across the core civil service, health and education sectors.
He also assured workers of the government’s commitment to the prompt payment of salaries, pensions and other entitlements, attributing the consistency to prudent financial management.
The governor said his administration had equally implemented the new minimum wage structure in consultation with labour leaders, stressing that the policy was designed to promote fairness and safeguard workers’ interests.
Giving an account of the government’s achievements in the health sector, Commissioner for Health, Ismaila Yakubu Augie, disclosed that the state had renovated 25 General Hospitals and about 173 Primary Healthcare Centres across Kebbi.
Augie said the government had also recruited and absorbed critical health professionals, including nurses, midwives, laboratory scientists and pharmacists, while several casual workers had been moved to the formal payroll.
He added that the renovated health facilities were equipped with medicines, ambulances and other essential medical equipment to improve access to quality healthcare, particularly at the grassroots.
The commissioner disclosed that the state government had invested approximately N2 billion in ambulances, describing the investment as part of efforts to strengthen emergency medical response and healthcare delivery.
He further said measures had been introduced to improve the welfare of state-employed doctors and reduce the migration of medical professionals from Kebbi to federal institutions.
The convention also witnessed a show of support from major professional health groups, including the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and Medical Laboratory Scientists.
The health workers expressed confidence in the governor’s healthcare reforms and pledged continued cooperation with the state government to improve healthcare delivery.
They also presented a progress report on grassroots healthcare mobilisation, including interventions that provided support to 2,500 pregnant women across the state.
In his vote of thanks, the Kebbi State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Murtala Usman, commended Governor Idris for attending the convention and maintaining a partnership with organised labour.
Usman praised the administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare and prayed for continued peace, development and prosperity in Kebbi State.
The convention ended with a renewed pledge by health workers and labour leaders to support government efforts aimed at strengthening the state’s healthcare system and improving the welfare of its workforce.
