The Kebbi State Government has commenced the distribution of the Presidential Emergency Food Intervention for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Shanga Local Government Area, alongside thousands of food baskets donated by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) to vulnerable households across the state.
Flagging off the exercise, Governor Nasiru Idris commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for sustaining humanitarian interventions aimed at cushioning the effects of economic hardship on vulnerable Nigerians.
The governor also expressed appreciation to the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for their continued support to Nigerians affected by hardship and humanitarian challenges.
Governor Idris noted that Kebbi State has remained a major beneficiary of interventions by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and KSrelief, describing both organisations as reliable partners in delivering timely assistance to citizens in need.
He said the combined intervention would provide much-needed relief to thousands of vulnerable families across the state while complementing the state government’s efforts to improve the welfare of its people.
The governor urged beneficiaries to utilise the food items for the benefit of their households and warned against selling the relief materials.
He emphasised that the intervention was specifically designed to ease the hardship facing vulnerable families and called on community leaders and security agencies to ensure that the food items reached the intended beneficiaries without diversion.
Earlier, the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, represented by the Director of Special Duties, Hajiya Fatima Suleiman Kassim, disclosed that KSrelief donated 24,302 food baskets for distribution to vulnerable households in Kebbi, Benue, Anambra, Yobe and Taraba states.
According to her, Kebbi State received 4,399 food baskets, which will be distributed to households that had already been profiled under the programme.
She also used the occasion to sensitise residents on flood preparedness as the rainy season gathers momentum, urging communities to heed early warning advisories, clear blocked drainage channels and support disaster preparedness efforts to minimise the impact of flooding.
The distribution exercise underscores the collaborative efforts of the Federal Government, NEMA and international humanitarian partners to provide food relief and strengthen support for vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
