The Kebbi State Government has approved the extension of the retirement age for medical and veterinary doctors in the state civil service from 60 to 65 years, in a major policy shift aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery.
Governor Nasir Idris announced the decision during an Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, according to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Establishment, Pension and Training, Auwal Manu Dogondaji.
Under the new arrangement, the length of service for affected professionals has also been extended from 35 to 40 years, whichever comes first.
The government explained that the decision was informed by concerns that the previous retirement policy led to the early exit of experienced surgeons, consultants, and specialists who are often most effective between the ages of 55 and 65.
Officials said the reform is part of broader efforts to address manpower shortages in the health sector, curb the impact of brain drain, and close critical staffing gaps created by frequent retirements.
The policy also covers veterinary doctors, who are now included in the extended service framework.
However, the government stressed that continued service beyond the age of 60 or 35 years in service will be subject to strict annual medical fitness certification and satisfactory performance evaluations to ensure quality service delivery.
Authorities described the move as a strategic intervention designed to retain experienced professionals and improve healthcare and veterinary services across the state.
