The Katsina State Police Command has recorded another breakthrough in its crackdown on illicit drug trafficking with the arrest of a 37-year-old suspected drug dealer allegedly caught transporting 28 blocks of suspected cannabis along the Mashi–Birnin Kuka border corridor.
Police identified the suspect as Ibrahim Usman, who was intercepted by operatives during a routine visibility patrol at about 8:00 p.m. on July 20, following credible intelligence on his alleged activities.
According to the command, a thorough search of the suspect led to the recovery of 28 blocks of dried leaves believed to be Cannabis sativa, concealed for distribution.
Investigators disclosed that the suspect allegedly confessed during interrogation that the consignment was intended for sale within Katsina State and neighbouring areas, raising concerns over the growing threat posed by drug trafficking networks operating across border communities.
The suspect has since been taken into police custody, while detectives continue investigations to uncover possible accomplices and the wider distribution chain. Police said he would be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Reacting to the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ali Umar Fage, reaffirmed the command’s resolve to sustain the offensive against drug trafficking and other criminal activities across the state.
He warned drug dealers and other criminal elements to abandon their illegal activities or face the full weight of the law, stressing that the command would continue to intensify intelligence-led operations to rid Katsina of illicit drugs.
The police commissioner also commended residents for providing useful information that has aided the command’s crime-fighting efforts, urging members of the public to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible intelligence.
