A swift response by security operatives has disrupted separate bandit operations in Kankia and Musawa Local Government Areas of Katsina State, with three kidnapped victims rescued, 12 rustled cows recovered and one suspected bandit killed.

The two incidents, which occurred within hours of each other, highlighted the growing pressure on criminal groups operating around rural communities and major access routes in the state.

In Kankia, trouble started at about 9:30pm on Tuesday, October 6, when suspected armed bandits invaded Fakuwa village, abducted three residents and drove away 12 cows.

Rather than allowing the attackers to escape with their victims and livestock, the Divisional Police Officer in Kankia immediately mobilised a joint team of police personnel and local vigilantes.

The team pursued the attackers and eventually engaged them in a prolonged gun battle.

According to the police, the superior response forced the bandits to abandon their operation and flee into the forest, with some believed to have suffered gunshot wounds.

The operation resulted in the safe recovery of the three victims and all 12 rustled cows.

The rescued victims were identified as 50-year-old Jamila Alti, 15-year-old Aisha Alti and 60-year-old Alhaji Dalladi.

Police authorities said the three victims have been reunited with their families.

Barely four hours later, another security operation was launched in Musawa following reports that suspected bandits had blocked the Kiryoyi-Dangani Road.

The incident occurred at about 1:30am on Wednesday, October 7.

The DPO Musawa quickly mobilised operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), who moved to the location.

A gun battle reportedly followed their arrival, forcing the suspected criminals to abandon the road and retreat.

Security operatives later conducted a cordon-and-search operation in the area and recovered the body of one suspected bandit.

A machete was reportedly found beside the body.

The police said operations were continuing to locate and arrest other members of the group who escaped during the encounter.

Commenting on the two incidents, Katsina State Commissioner of Police, CP Ali Umar Fage, commended the personnel involved for their courage and professionalism.

He also called on residents to strengthen cooperation with security agencies by providing timely and credible information on suspicious movements and activities.

The latest operations come as security agencies continue efforts to prevent bandit groups from exploiting rural communities, roads and farming areas across Katsina State.

The Police Command assured residents that it would sustain proactive operations aimed at protecting lives and property and denying criminal elements freedom of movement.
