Kano Remains Nigeria’s Almajiri Epicentre — Commissioner

Borno State Government

KANO — Kano State remains the national epicentre of the Almajiri system, with the state government intensifying efforts to reform the system and tackle the challenge of out-of-school children, the Commissioner for Education, Ali Makoda, has said.

Makoda disclosed this while highlighting the demographic realities confronting the state’s education sector, stressing that Kano’s unique population structure makes it central to any serious national conversation on Almajiri education.

According to the commissioner, a special committee was established to examine the system and draw from international best practices that could be adapted to Kano’s peculiar circumstances.

He said the initiative was aimed at finding sustainable ways of integrating Almajiri education into the broader education system while addressing the factors responsible for children remaining outside formal schooling.

Makoda recalled that previous assessments had put the number of out-of-school children in Kano at about one million.

However, he said recent interventions had begun to yield results, with the number recording an 11.3 per cent decline.

The commissioner said the development represented encouraging progress, but acknowledged that much more needed to be done given Kano’s large population and the scale of the Almajiri challenge.

He stressed the importance of adopting proven strategies from other parts of the world while developing solutions that reflect Kano’s social, cultural and demographic realities.

Makoda maintained that the state’s education authorities would continue to pursue measures aimed at expanding access to quality education and reducing the number of children excluded from formal learning.

The commissioner’s remarks underline the scale of Kano’s Almajiri challenge while highlighting recent efforts to reverse the state’s longstanding out-of-school children crisis.
