Tragedy struck in Kankia Local Government Area of Katsina State as 11 residents were killed in a retaliatory bandit attack, even as security forces recorded a major operational success earlier in the day.
In a statement by the Katsina State Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, the government confirmed that security operatives had earlier intercepted a gang led by notorious bandit leader Muhammadu Fulani, neutralising several attackers and recovering eight motorcycles along with rustled cattle.
The swift operation, led by the Divisional Police Officer of Kankia, was hailed as a significant victory for law enforcement, following credible intelligence provided by vigilant community members.
However, in a shocking turn, the same bandit leader reportedly regrouped hours later and launched a deadly reprisal attack on Gwalgoro Village in Gyaza/Kunduru Ward around midday.
The assault left 11 innocent civilians dead, in what authorities described as a “cowardly and deliberate act of terror” targeting unarmed residents.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, through the ministry, condemned the killings in strong terms and extended condolences to the bereaved families, assuring that the state would not relent in confronting criminal elements.
The government also praised the courage and professionalism of security forces, emphasizing that their rapid response prevented further damage during the initial encounter.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely intelligence, which officials say remains crucial in preventing attacks and saving lives.
As tension lingers in the area, authorities reaffirmed their commitment to restoring peace and ensuring that those behind the violence are brought to justice.
