…Association says monthly payment plan is restoring confidence among contractors
The Contractors Association of Kaduna State has commended Governor Uba Sani for what it described as a deliberate effort to tackle the huge financial liabilities inherited from the previous administration.
The association said the governor’s decision to establish a structured monthly payment arrangement for verified outstanding debts has brought renewed confidence to contractors doing business with the Kaduna State Government.
Chairman of the association, Engr. Ahmed Baba, disclosed this after a high-level meeting between senior Kaduna State Government officials and the leadership of the contractors’ body in Kaduna.
Baba acknowledged that the administration inherited substantial unpaid obligations but said Governor Sani had chosen to confront the challenge rather than allow the burden to continue weighing on contractors and businesses that had completed government projects.
According to him, the governor’s approach demonstrates an understanding that government is a continuous process and that legitimate obligations should not simply disappear when an administration changes.
“He has demonstrated true leadership by recognising that contractors must not suffer for services already rendered to the state,” Baba said.
He explained that the newly approved monthly payment structure would enable the government to gradually settle verified inherited liabilities in a systematic manner.
For many contractors, the issue goes beyond figures on government documents.
Baba said delayed payments can affect businesses, workers, suppliers and families, particularly where contractors have borrowed money or committed resources to execute public projects before receiving payment.
The association therefore described the payment arrangement as a major relief for its members, saying it would help restore financial stability and strengthen confidence in government contracts.
Baba also claimed that since the beginning of the Sani administration, contractors handling projects awarded by the present government had not been left unpaid.
He described the development as encouraging, particularly against the background of the liabilities inherited by the administration.
“Despite inheriting a huge burden of outstanding liabilities, His Excellency has made it clear that government is a continuum and that contractors must not suffer for their service to the state.
“The monthly payment structure he has approved is a lifeline to many of our members,” he said.
The association said it was encouraged by what it described as the administration’s commitment to meeting its financial obligations while simultaneously pursuing infrastructure development across Kaduna State.
Baba assured the government that contractors would reciprocate the gesture by maintaining professional standards and ensuring that projects entrusted to them were delivered according to agreed specifications and timelines.
He added that the association remained committed to working with the state government to support its infrastructure agenda and contribute to the development of Kaduna.
The contractors’ position comes as governments across Nigeria continue to grapple with inherited debts and unpaid contractual obligations, which can complicate the implementation of new infrastructure projects.
For Kaduna contractors, however, the association said the emerging payment framework offers a measure of reassurance that verified debts from previous administrations are being addressed.
The association consequently expressed appreciation to Governor Sani and his administration, while urging continued engagement between government and contractors to ensure that outstanding issues are resolved transparently and systematically.
