Human rights lawyer and security analyst, Bulama Bukarti, has urged the police and other law enforcement agencies to intensify their response to reported crimes, warning that delays in delivering justice could fuel the growing trend of jungle justice across the country.
Bukarti said the most effective way to discourage citizens from taking the law into their own hands is for security agencies to investigate criminal allegations promptly, transparently and professionally.
According to him, when members of the public are confident that suspected criminals will be properly investigated, prosecuted and punished where found guilty, the temptation to resort to mob action will reduce significantly.
“The police and other security and law enforcement agencies must understand that the best way to stop people from jungle justice is to expeditiously and transparently investigate reports of crime and make sure that the criminals are punished,” Bukarti said.
He stressed that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done, particularly in cases capable of generating public anger and suspicion.
Bukarti’s position comes amid renewed concerns over mob killings and extrajudicial punishment, with growing calls for stronger policing, quicker investigations and improved public confidence in the justice system.
He maintained that allowing frustration over crime to turn into mob violence would only create more victims and further undermine the rule of law.
