Former Political Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and APC chieftain, Prof. Rufa’i Ahmed Alkali, has expressed deep sadness over the death of former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Comrade Patrick Osertin Osambedwan.
Alkali, in a statement, described Osambedwan’s death as a painful loss to the journalism profession and the nation, noting his significant contributions to journalism, public service and democratic governance.
He described the deceased as a consummate media professional, trusted friend and courageous journalist who remained committed to truth, accountability, press freedom and professional ethics throughout his career.
According to him, Osambedwan belonged to a generation of journalists who considered journalism a sacred calling dedicated to public enlightenment, accountability and national development.
Alkali noted that as a former Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Osambedwan played important roles in strengthening the union and promoting the welfare and interests of journalists in the FCT and beyond.
The APC chieftain also expressed concern over what he described as the disturbing rise in the deaths of journalists in the FCT and across Nigeria.
He said the frequent loss of media professionals within a short period should serve as a wake-up call to stakeholders to pay greater attention to the welfare, healthcare and overall well-being of journalists.
Alkali stressed that journalists make enormous sacrifices in informing, educating and enlightening the public, urging stakeholders to ensure that media professionals receive the necessary support and care.
While mourning the Osambedwan, he said the deceased should also be remembered for a life dedicated to service, integrity, professionalism and humanity.
He extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, the NUJ FCT Council, colleagues in the media industry, friends and associates of Osambedwan.
Alkali prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive the deceased’s shortcomings, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus and give his family and loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
