Ten National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members abducted in Kogi State have been rescued following a coordinated security operation in Ofu Local Government Area.
The victims were recovered from a forest in the area after a joint team comprising personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, military, Department of State Services (DSS) and other auxiliary security formations launched an intelligence-led operation to track the abductors.
The Kogi State Police Command said the operation was part of sustained efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating around the affected communities and secure the safe return of those taken hostage.
In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Salihu Oyiza Afusat, the police said the operation remained ongoing as security personnel continued to comb the area for other victims and pursue the suspected kidnappers.
According to the Command, the successful rescue of the 10 corps members has raised hopes that the remaining victims could also be recovered safely.
“Security forces have intensified operations within the area and are making concerted efforts to locate and safely recover the remaining victims, while simultaneously pursuing the perpetrators responsible for the attack,” the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State praised the personnel involved in the operation, describing their efforts as a demonstration of courage, professionalism and determination.
He also commended residents of the affected communities for providing timely and credible information that helped security agencies advance their operation.
The police commissioner urged members of the public to remain calm but vigilant, stressing that useful information from residents could prove crucial in locating the remaining victims and apprehending those behind the attack.
The Command further assured residents that additional operational resources would be deployed until all the victims are accounted for and the perpetrators brought to justice.
The development comes as security agencies intensify efforts to curb kidnapping and other criminal activities in vulnerable communities across Kogi State.
