Sokoto state government will soon commence the distribution of sanitary pads in schools and work places as efforts to enhance girls enrollment and overall women inclusion in the society.
Hajia Hadiza Shagari, the State’s Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs states this his her address marking the 2024 International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration in Sokoto.
Shagari said the present administration has focus on women development as part of strategies for economic and social development.
She said government had line up entrepreneurial development for women across the state in recognition that thier votes constituted higher percent of votes garnered by Gov. Ahmad Aliyu during the 2023 elections.
While she commended the support of United Nations Population Funds (UNFPA) and other donors, the Commissioner described this year’s theme ”Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress” as apt” as women are critical to national development.
She called for accelerating action gender parity and women inclusion in all policy and programmes.
Meanwhile, the Sokoto State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (SSPHCDA) in collaboration with development partners organized a women sensitization programme as part of IWD events.
The Executive Secretary of SSPHCDA, Dr Larai Tambuwal, encourage women to access healthcare facilities to take advantage of the chain services designed to improve their health and wellbeing.
Tambuwal urged women to consider themselves important as recognized by religious provisions and advised them to support thier husbands on family upkeeping as well as actively participate in the community programmes.
Speaking on behalf of supporting partners, Mrs Shafa’atu Umar, urged government and stakeholders to increased the availability of family planning supports and maternal health services in general.
Dr Tukur Magaji, the Director Community Health in SSPHCDA, reiterated government committement on women and children healthcare through divers programmes in all the health facilities in the state.
Magaji said the awareness engagement was part of the IWD celebration every March 8 as the global day for acknowledging the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
