An Italy-based Nigerian businessman has landed in the custody of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) after allegedly excreting 98 wraps of cocaine at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
The suspect was arrested during an airport operation as NDLEA operatives intensified efforts to dismantle international drug trafficking networks using Nigerian airports and seaports.
According to the agency, the businessman came under suspicion during routine screening, leading to further investigation and his eventual arrest. He subsequently expelled a total of 98 wraps of cocaine, which were recovered by operatives.
The Enugu arrest was among a series of major interceptions recorded by the NDLEA in different parts of the country, highlighting the agency’s renewed crackdown on traffickers moving illicit drugs through airports, courier channels, roads and seaports.
In another operation, NDLEA operatives intercepted consignments of cocaine allegedly destined for Saudi Arabia and Europe, with some of the drugs concealed inside phone chargers and a backpack.
The agency also reported significant drug recoveries in Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Abia, Seme and the Tin Can Island Port operations.
The latest seizures, according to the agency, demonstrate the increasingly sophisticated methods being adopted by drug traffickers to conceal and transport illicit substances across borders.
NDLEA officials said the agency would continue to strengthen intelligence-led operations at airports, ports, land borders and other strategic entry and exit points to frustrate trafficking networks.
The suspects arrested in connection with the various operations are expected to face prosecution as investigations continue into their alleged roles in the drug trade.
The agency warned that Nigeria would not be allowed to serve as either a transit route or destination for international drug trafficking, stressing that operatives would continue to pursue individuals and networks involved in the illicit business.
