HEALTH BOOST FOR KEBBI: UNICEF Rolls Out 45 Motorcycles to Reach Remote Communities

Borno State Government

A major boost has come for healthcare delivery in Kebbi State as the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), alongside partners including the World Health Organization and United Nations Development Programme, donated 45 motorcycles to improve mobility of frontline health workers.

The handover, held at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi, is aimed at strengthening monitoring and delivery of health programmes, especially in hard-to-reach areas.

UNICEF Country Representative Wafaa Saeed praised the state’s leadership for prioritizing healthcare and social welfare, noting that Kebbi is well-positioned to lead efforts against vaccine-derived polio following Nigeria’s 2020 milestone in eradicating the wild poliovirus.

Echoing similar sentiments, WHO Country Representative Pavel Ursu commended the state’s investments in health infrastructure and workforce development, highlighting improved disease surveillance and response systems.

Also speaking, UNDP’s Northwest Representative Asharaf Usman revealed plans to expand peace and development initiatives in the state, focusing on livelihoods and community stability.

Governor Nasir Idris reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening partnerships, disclosing that over 22 general hospitals, 179 primary healthcare centres, and 63 dispensaries have been revitalized, while tens of thousands of vulnerable residents now benefit from the state’s health insurance scheme.

The newly donated motorcycles are expected to significantly enhance outreach, enabling health workers to deliver life-saving services across remote communities.
