A disturbing allegation of abuse of power has rocked Lagos, as a resident claims he was coerced at gunpoint by suspected police operatives into transferring N200,000 during an early morning encounter.
The victim, identified as Aare Feyisayo, recounted the harrowing experience in a viral Facebook post, accusing officers attached to the Lagos State Police Command of orchestrating the brazen act along the busy Ajao–Cele axis.
According to his account, the incident unfolded at about 5:55 a.m. on April 22, 2026, at Ajao Junction. Feyisayo said he had briefly stopped to pick up a colleague, Chinedu, when his vehicle was suddenly intercepted by a suspicious commercial bus, popularly known as a “korope,” allegedly operated by armed men in police uniform.
“They double-crossed me and forced my colleague out,” he wrote. “They seized my keys and pushed me to the back seat. Three of them entered my car. They were fully armed, dressed like policemen, and one even wore a mask.”
The victim further alleged that the officers took control of his vehicle, driving him through the NAHCO Bridge en route to Cele, inward Mile 2. There, he said, the ordeal escalated.
“At exactly 6:29 a.m., they stopped near Cele Express and forced me, at gunpoint, to transfer N200,000 into a First Bank of Nigeria account,” he stated. “Once they confirmed the alert, they abandoned my car, jumped into their waiting bus, and fled towards Mile 2.”
Feyisayo claimed he promptly reported the incident at a nearby police station, presenting photographic evidence of the alleged gang leader. However, he expressed frustration over what he described as a lack of visible progress in the investigation.
The allegation has since sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians demanding accountability and swift action from authorities amid longstanding concerns about police misconduct.
Reacting to the development, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Adebisi Abimbola, confirmed that the command is aware of the case.
“Yes, the command is aware. It is being investigated,” she said in a brief response via WhatsApp, assuring that updates would be communicated in due course.
While the police have yet to release further details, the incident has reignited calls for deeper reforms within the Nigeria Police Force, particularly in addressing allegations of extortion and abuse of authority.
As investigations continue, residents are watching closely, hoping the case will not be swept under the rug but instead serve as a test of the force’s commitment to accountability and justice.
