The Gombe State Electricity Regulatory Commission (GOSERC) has engaged key stakeholders in an interactive session aimed at sensitising them on the mandate, objectives and responsibilities of the commission.
The engagement, held at the commission’s headquarters in Gombe, brought together representatives of various stakeholders, including the Groundnut Millers Association, Table Water Producers Association, Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), traditional institutions and other relevant groups.
Declaring the session open, the Gombe State Commissioner for Energy and Natural Resources, Alhaji Sanusi Ahmad Maidalan Pindiga, described the engagement as a critical milestone in the state’s drive towards energy independence, industrial growth and economic development.
The commissioner said the establishment of GOSERC was made possible by the constitutional mandate provided under the Electricity Act 2023, which allows states to play a greater role in regulating their electricity markets.
He said Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya had taken a decisive step by establishing GOSERC, thereby decentralising electricity regulatory oversight and placing the regulation of the state’s electricity market within the control of Gombe State.
Earlier, the Chairman of GOSERC, Alhaji Abba Arabi, said the stakeholder engagement was organised in line with the objectives for which the commission was established.
He explained that the programme was designed to familiarise stakeholders with the commission’s mandate and provide a platform for them to contribute to the development of a functional electricity regulatory framework in the state.
The Commissioner in charge of Legal Affairs, Barrister Talatu Abubakar, assured participants that recommendations and observations presented by the various stakeholder groups would be carefully reviewed for possible implementation.
Also speaking, the representative of the Senior District Head of Gombe, Alhaji Sammani Babba, described the establishment of GOSERC as another significant milestone in the development of Gombe State.
Representatives of the Groundnut Millers Association, Table Water Producers Association, ASUU and COREN expressed their support for the commission and pledged to cooperate with it in achieving its objectives.
The Deputy Chairman of the Commission, Engineer Suleman Usman, and the Commissioner for Technical Affairs, Abubakar Sa’ad, also provided updates on the commission’s activities, including its relationship with electricity distribution companies and consumers.
Participants used the interactive session to raise questions and make observations, particularly on electricity supply, regulation, consumer concerns and the operations of the Savannah Electricity Company.
The commission responded to the questions and assured stakeholders of its commitment to promoting an efficient, transparent and consumer-focused electricity regulatory system in Gombe State.
