A member of the Gombe Cemetery Committee, Dr. Ardo Chindo Abubakar, has called on wealthy individuals, philanthropists, business owners and other well to do members of the public to support efforts towards the maintenance and effective management of cemeteries in Gombe State.
Dr. Ardo made the appeal while speaking with journalists shortly after the commissioning of a newly developed cemetery site along Bajoga Road in Gombe.
He said the maintenance of the cemetery required collective responsibility, urging members of the public to contribute towards providing essential facilities and equipment needed to ensure a clean, organised and dignified burial environment.
The committee member specifically identified hoes, shovels and wheelbarrows as some of the important tools required to facilitate burial activities and ensure that the remains of deceased persons are accorded the dignity they deserve.
He commended the Chairman of Gombe Local Government Area, Professor Abdullahi Bappah Garkuwa, for his commitment and support towards the provision of necessary assistance for the development and maintenance of the cemetery.
Dr. Ardo observed that a cemetery represents the final resting place of every human being, irrespective of social status, position or wealth, noting that everyone would eventually depend on such facilities.
He therefore called on individuals and organisations to contribute their quota towards maintaining the cemetery, stressing that community participation and support were essential to sustaining the facility for present and future generations.
He added that adequate maintenance of cemeteries would not only improve the environment but also ensure that burial arrangements were conducted in a dignified and respectful manner.
