GUSAU — Eight members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have resigned their membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), triggering a fresh political development in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The lawmakers announced their defection on Saturday during plenary at the Assembly complex in Gusau, the state capital.
Those affected represent Mafara South, Maradun I, Bakura, Bukkuyum North, Gummi I, Bungudu North, Maru North and Kaura constituencies.
The latest development adds another twist to the series of political realignments taking place across Zamfara as political parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
Although the lawmakers have not publicly disclosed their next political destination, reports indicate that they could be heading to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which currently controls the Zamfara State Government.
The defection is also expected to reshape the political calculations within the 24-member State House of Assembly, particularly as lawmakers continue to realign themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Zamfara has witnessed several high-profile movements between the APC and PDP in recent months. In March 2026, the Speaker, Bilyaminu Moriki, and 12 other lawmakers defected from the PDP to the APC, underscoring the fluid nature of politics in the state.
The latest defections therefore represent another significant shift in the composition and political dynamics of the Assembly.
