The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned three individuals before the Federal High Court in Maiduguri over an alleged ₦42 million contract fraud linked to a non-governmental organisation.
The defendants — Aisha Alkali Wakil, Sa’idu Tahiru Daura and Prince Lawal Shoyede — were docked on Thursday before Justice Jude K. Dagat by the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the EFCC on a two-count amended charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence.
According to the anti-graft agency, the accused allegedly deceived ABAKS Ventures Nigeria Limited into parting with ₦42 million meant for the completion of a purported sub-leased contract allegedly awarded by Complete Care and Aid Foundation.
The EFCC told the court that the defendants, who served as Chief Executive Officer, Programme Manager and Country Director respectively of the NGO, knew the contract arrangement was false at the time the money was collected.
While Aisha Wakil and Prince Shoyede pleaded not guilty to the charges, Sa’idu Daura admitted guilt during the court proceedings.
Following the pleas, prosecution counsel N.T. Iko urged the court to sentence Daura accordingly and requested an adjournment for the commencement of trial against the other two defendants.
Justice Dagat subsequently adjourned the matter to June 25, 2026, for sentencing and continuation of trial proceedings, and ordered that all the defendants be remanded at the Maiduguri Maximum Correctional Facility.
The case adds to the growing list of high-profile fraud prosecutions being pursued by the EFCC across the country.
