The Edo State Police Command has dismissed five serving police officers after they were found guilty of engaging in criminal activities while in active service, in a move aimed at restoring public confidence in the force.
The dismissed officers were reportedly part of a notorious gang that preyed on unsuspecting residents across Benin City. According to police findings, the officers allegedly used commercial buses to intercept victims, force them into the vehicles, and drive them around the city while subjecting them to threats and intimidation.
Investigations revealed that the victims were coerced into transferring money through Point of Sale (POS) machines before being released, with the officers allegedly using fear and harassment to extort cash.
The Command said the officers were de-kitted and dismissed after an internal disciplinary process established their involvement in the criminal acts, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force has zero tolerance for corruption, extortion, and abuse of office.
Police authorities reiterated their commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights, assuring residents that officers who tarnish the image of the force will continue to face the full weight of the law.
The dismissal has been welcomed by many residents, who described it as a strong warning to rogue officers and a significant step toward sanitising the police force in Edo State.
