Tension erupted at the TinCan Island terminal of MRS in Apapa, Lagos, on Wednesday after officers of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) reportedly stopped the discharge of petrol from a vessel carrying thousands of metric tonnes of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
Sources said Customs officers confronted security operatives at the terminal during the standoff and allegedly attempted to arrest the captain of the vessel, identified as Mt Ny Maria.
The vessel was reportedly loaded with about 81,200 metric tonnes of petrol intended for discharge at the terminal.
The development caused temporary disruption at the facility, although details surrounding the Customs action were still unclear as of press time.
Officials of the NCS and MRS had yet to issue formal statements on the incident.
