A controversial statement questioning former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye’s Islamic knowledge has stirred debate over religion, faith and the proposed comparison of Qur’anic knowledge involving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The statement’s author argued that Melaye, being a non-Muslim, could not acquire the kind of religious knowledge that would enable him to engage President Tinubu in a Qur’anic competition.
The author further maintained that regardless of how extensive Melaye’s knowledge of Islam might be, such knowledge would have little religious significance to Muslims if he did not personally profess the Islamic faith.
“Dino should know that his knowledge of Islam, no matter how vast, is useless to us Muslims if he is not a Muslim,” the statement declared.
The remarks have brought renewed attention to the distinction between academic knowledge of Islam and personal religious belief, particularly amid public discussions involving prominent political figures.
However, the comments have also raised questions about whether knowledge of a religion should be assessed separately from an individual’s personal faith.
