The trial of former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, took a dramatic turn on Wednesday as a prosecution witness told the court that all defendants made their statements freely and under caution.
Testifying before Justice Charles Agbaza at the FCT High Court, Abuja, EFCC investigator Salihu Kadiri maintained that the statements in question were obtained without coercion during a trial-within-trial ordered to determine their admissibility.
Dasuki, alongside Aminu Baba Kusa and two companies, is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 32-count charge involving alleged breach of trust and diversion of ₦33.2 billion.
The court had initiated the mini-trial following objections from defence counsel, who argued that the statements were not voluntarily made and therefore violate provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
However, Kadiri told the court that the second defendant wrote his statement inside EFCC premises after being duly cautioned, with officials present, insisting the process complied with legal standards.
Under cross-examination, the witness confirmed the existence of visitation records and CCTV coverage at the time but noted that video recording of statement-taking was not a legal requirement.
He also addressed questions over procedural details, stating that his signature on certain parts of the statement was not mandatory under the law.
Justice Agbaza subsequently adjourned the case to May 15 and 29, 2026, for the defence to open its case, as the high-stakes trial continues to unfold.
