COURT DRAMA: El-Rufai Remanded as Judge Fixes May Dates for Explosive Phone-Bugging Case

Borno State Government

Fresh twists have emerged in the high-profile trial of former Kaduna governor, Nasir El-Rufai, as a Federal High Court in Abuja adjourned proceedings to May 18, 19, and 20 for accelerated hearing.

El-Rufai is facing charges over the alleged interception of a phone conversation involving National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

In a dramatic courtroom session, the judge ordered that the former governor be remanded in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) pending further proceedings.

However, defence counsel pushed back, arguing that El-Rufai is currently being held by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), which is also pursuing multiple cases against him.

The judge subsequently directed both parties to resolve the custody question—whether El-Rufai should remain with the ICPC or be transferred to DSS custody.

The court is expected to hear multiple applications, including a crucial ruling on El-Rufai’s bail request, when proceedings resume—setting the stage for an intense legal showdown in the coming weeks.
