The Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja, has admitted additional exhibits tendered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, over the alleged unlawful redesign of the naira.
Justice Maryanne Anineh admitted the documents on Monday during proceedings in the high-profile case.
The exhibits included certified newspaper publications from The Punch, ThisDay, Vanguard, Daily Sun, and The Nation, alongside payment receipts for the purchase of the newspapers.
The documents were presented by EFCC prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, through the eighth prosecution witness, Jegede Oluwasegun, an official of the National Library.
Oyedepo explained that the exhibits were tendered in compliance with a motion earlier filed by the defence on March 31, 2026, requesting the prosecution to produce all press releases and newspaper reports relating to the alleged unlawful naira redesign.
The defence did not object to the admissibility of the documents, leading the court to formally admit them as evidence.
During cross-examination by defence counsel, Olalekan Ojo, SAN, the witness clarified that his role at the National Library was limited to attending to information requests and certifying newspaper documents.
He told the court that he neither authored the publications nor had personal knowledge of the contents, stressing that his duty was strictly administrative.
Emefiele is currently facing a four-count charge filed by the EFCC over the alleged unlawful printing and redesign of Nigeria’s currency notes while serving as CBN governor.
The case continues amid intense public interest over the controversial naira redesign policy that triggered nationwide cash shortages and economic disruption.
