Cholera Ravages Zamfara Bandit Camp, Notorious King’s Deputy Among Six Feared Dead

Borno State Government

A deadly cholera outbreak has reportedly ripped through the camp of a notorious bandit kingpin in Zamfara State, killing at least six suspected bandits, including the second-in-command of the criminal network.

Security and local sources said the outbreak struck the hideout of Muhammadu Gwaska in Anka Local Government Area, where the disease spread rapidly among members of the gang, triggering multiple deaths within days.

Among those reportedly killed is Abubakar Dattiya, Gwaska’s trusted deputy, whose death is expected to deal a significant blow to the leadership and operations of the armed group.

Sources familiar with the incident disclosed that several bandits suddenly developed symptoms consistent with cholera before the illness swept through the camp. With little or no access to proper medical care in the remote forest enclave, the outbreak reportedly claimed multiple lives in quick succession.

While the development has not been officially confirmed by authorities, security sources said intelligence operatives are monitoring the situation to determine the full extent of the casualties and its impact on the gang’s operational strength.

The reported outbreak comes as security forces continue sustained offensives against armed groups across Zamfara and other North-West states, targeting notorious bandit enclaves responsible for kidnappings, killings and cattle rustling.

Residents in affected communities have welcomed reports of the setback within the criminal camp, expressing hope that it will further weaken the group’s ability to launch attacks on innocent civilians.

Community leaders, however, urged security agencies not to relent in ongoing operations, insisting that sustained military pressure remains essential to dismantling the remaining bandit networks and restoring lasting peace across the region.

Many residents also offered prayers for the safety of innocent citizens, asking Almighty Allah to continue protecting vulnerable communities, grant success to security personnel and bring an enduring end to the insecurity that has devastated parts of the North-West.
