What began as a solemn burial for a slain vigilante leader in Katsina State quickly descended into fresh bloodshed and public outrage, as another bandit attack and the arrest of local defenders ignited a four-hour blockade of a major interstate highway.
The dramatic sequence of events unfolded in Gidan Barau, Malumfashi Local Government Area, where armed bandits killed two residents, including the community’s vigilante commander, Alhaji Nura, during a fierce gun battle on Wednesday morning.
Residents said dozens of heavily armed bandits stormed the community around 8:00 a.m. in an apparent raid, but local vigilantes and youths swiftly mobilised to resist the attackers. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, Alhaji Nura was fatally shot, while another resident was also killed. Several others sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital.
The victims were buried according to Islamic rites, but tragedy struck again before the burial could be concluded.
Community leaders said the bandits launched a second assault while mourners were still gathered at the cemetery, forcing residents to split into two groups—one to continue the burial and the other to repel the renewed attack.
According to Sarkin Fili Khalid Suleiman, some fleeing bandits reportedly took refuge in a nearby house allegedly belonging to an individual who had previously entered into a peace arrangement with them.
He claimed that when local youths pursued the suspects, a confrontation erupted before the homeowner alerted the police, who allegedly arrested the community members instead of the suspected criminals.
The arrests sparked widespread anger, with residents accusing security personnel of criminalising those risking their lives to defend the community from repeated attacks.
In protest, hundreds of residents barricaded the busy Malumfashi junction linking Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara states, bringing vehicular movement to a complete standstill for about four hours.
The standoff drew the intervention of senior police officers, including the Area Commander and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), who held talks with community leaders in an effort to restore calm.
The protest was eventually called off after respected community figures, Alhaji Abdulaziz Abdulaziz (Sardaunan Matasa) and Baba Sanusi, intervened.
Abdulaziz later confirmed that he personally signed an undertaking at the police station to secure the release of the arrested residents, paving the way for the reopening of the highway.
As of the time of filing this report, the Katsina State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the attack, the arrests, or the allegations raised by the community.
