Borno State Government

Pate Youth Ambassadors Initiative (PYI), a political pressure group has observed that the Bauchi APC stakeholders recent adaptation of direct primary election for the state governorship aspirant if implemented will spell doom for the party

The PYI stressed the need for a concensus candidate to emerge as the APC gubernatorial flag-bearer in the scheduled next week primaries of the party, suggesting that same should also be adopted for both the Senate and House of Representatives.

Director-general of the initiative, Comrade Mohammed Sani Hassan noted that direct primary election is prone to insecurity, misunderstanding, and likely disunity that may  tear the APC in Bauchi apart with possible defection after the exercise or even anti-party during general elections in the state.

Comrade Mohammed Sani Hassan at a press conference in Bauchi weekend, expressed confidence that consensus would promote peace and unity among party members, and eventually culminate to the victory of the APC in in the state in the forthcoming general elections.

“Today, we are gathered here to passionately appeal to all APC aspirants in Bauchi State who have purchased nomination forms to contest for the positions of Governor, Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly to embrace the spirit of unity by adopting the method of consensus rather than direct primaries”.

Hassan opined, “In direct primaries, there will be political thuggery, issues of insecurity, issues of party here and there, enmity will play more than the consensus. PYI is committed to peace, unity, and success of the APC, strongly believing that consensus remains the best democratic option for the party in Bauchi state”.

Direct primaries is will helpi the polity, we should adopt consensus, but if they want APC to loose, if they want to destroy the party, if they want increase insecurity in Bauchi state, then let them adopt the direct primaries. We consider the safety of lives and property of citizens first than any other thing”.

He added, “We are after peace and unity of the party and the country entirely. We have so many aspirants to the APC governorship seats, and we have no fewer than 323 wards across the state, and one thinking of concluding elections and simply go, it can’t be smooth as one can easily perceive”.

The PYI leader further observed that consensus promotes understanding, mutual respect, reconciliation, and party cohesion, while direct primaries if not properly managed, may create unnecessary tension, political thuggery, division, and enmity among party members.

According to him, taking into cognisance the current security challenges facing the nation, organizing direct primaries across different locations may expose party members and supporters, officiating personnel and innocent citizens to avoidable risks.

“At a time when Nigerians are calling for peace and stability, political activities should not become avenues for conflict or insecurity. Let’s remind party members of what happened during the CPC era in Bauchi State, where direct primaries led to serious disagreements, with multiple aspirants each claiming victory”.

Such incident, Hassan further observed, weakens the party internal democracy, create rancour and unnecessary divisions among loyal members, and emphasized the need to learn from history, while avoiding the repeat of past mistakes.

He argued, “If truly we love the APC and sincerely desire the party to take over power in Bauchi state after eight years in opposition, then unity must be our top priority. Victory can only be achieved through collective understanding, sacrifice, and mutual agreement among all stakeholders”

Hassan therefore appealed to all APC aspirants and their supporters, party executives at all levels, elders and stakeholders, Youth and women groups, and all loyal party members to support the adoption of consensus in the interest of peace, unity, and the overall victory of APC in the state comes 2027 polls.

Bauchi PYI director-general boosted that APC has credible governorship aspirants in the state, saying however that some are more good than others, capacity and experience wise, and even technocracy as well, and dedicated but retired civil public officers who have 35 years of meritorious service to humanity.

Hassan said however that among the seven to eight aspiring to the state’s plum seat, two of them are simply passing time, a former federal cabinet member who thinks he is relevant to contest, and a youth who was money influenced to obtain nomination form and thinks its his own, but as the PYI observes, “He is not supposed to be in the governorship race”.
