As political consultations ahead of Borno State’s next governorship election gradually gather pace, conversations are beginning to shift from who will lead the state to who could best complement that leadership as deputy governor.
Among the names increasingly mentioned in political circles is Ali Isa Abdullahi, popularly known as Ali SEMA, whose supporters and some political observers argue possesses the administrative experience and grassroots exposure needed to strengthen a future administration led by Engineer Mustapha Gubio.
For many of his backers, the deputy governorship should be more than a ceremonial office. They believe it requires an experienced public administrator capable of translating government policies into tangible results, particularly in a state still recovering from years of insurgency, displacement and humanitarian crises.
Abdullahi’s credentials, they argue, make him a strong contender.
A native of Biu Local Government Area, Abdullahi began his career in the Borno State Civil Service as an Audit Assistant in 1991 and steadily rose through the ranks. His career later took him to the Government House as Assistant Director of Administration before he assumed key responsibilities at the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), where he served as Director of Research and Statistics and now Acting Director-General.
His years at SEMA placed him at the centre of humanitarian operations across the state, coordinating relief for internally displaced persons, supervising interventions for rescued victims of insurgency and assisting returning refugees. He also led assessment teams to communities affected by floods and other emergencies, experiences supporters say gave him firsthand knowledge of the needs of people across Borno’s 27 local government areas.
Political analysts note that this background complements Gubio’s own record in reconstruction and rehabilitation. While Gubio became known for rebuilding public infrastructure in conflict-affected communities, Abdullahi focused on humanitarian interventions and community support, creating what some observers describe as a potentially complementary leadership partnership.
According to those familiar with his public service record, Abdullahi’s foundation in auditing and administration has also earned him a reputation for accountability, financial discipline and attention to detail—qualities they consider essential for managing public resources at a time when development demands remain high.
His appointment by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum as Acting Director-General of SEMA has further strengthened perceptions among supporters that he enjoys the confidence of the current administration and possesses the experience required for higher responsibility.
While the decision on any running mate remains solely with the governorship candidate, political observers believe the debate is likely to focus on competence, regional balance, administrative experience and the ability to sustain Borno’s reconstruction efforts.
For supporters of Ali Isa Abdullahi, those considerations place him among the leading names worthy of serious consideration. Whether that translates into a formal nomination remains to be seen, but his growing profile in public service has undoubtedly made him a notable figure in the state’s evolving political landscape.
