The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has dismissed reports of shooting during recent public disturbances in the state, saying no firearm was discharged by its personnel and no gunshot injury was recorded.

The Command, in a statement issued on Wednesday, October 1, 2026, said police officers deployed to maintain law and order acted with professionalism and restraint throughout the operation.

According to the police, contrary to reports circulating in some quarters, there was no shooting incident connected to the disturbance.

The Command also stated that no gunshot injury had been reported or recorded in connection with the incident.

However, the police confirmed the arrest of eight persons allegedly involved in acts capable of causing a breach of public peace and for allegedly disregarding lawful security directives.

The suspects, according to the Command, are currently assisting with ongoing investigations, while anyone found culpable will face the law.

Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, has consequently directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Tactical Commanders and other operational personnel across the state to remain vigilant while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and restraint.

The CP also warned that although the Command would continue to protect the lawful rights of residents, no individual or group would be allowed to use any guise to cause violence, intimidate members of the public or disrupt the prevailing peace in the state.

The police urged residents to remain calm and continue their lawful activities, warning against the spread of rumours and unverified reports capable of creating unnecessary fear and tension.

The Command further appealed to journalists, bloggers, social media users and content creators to verify security-related information through appropriate channels before publishing or sharing such reports.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Akwa Ibom State remains calm,” the Command stressed, reiterating that no shooting incident was recorded, no gunshot injury was reported and eight persons were arrested in connection with the disturbance.

The Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace and security across Akwa Ibom State.
