The Borno State Police Command has clarified the circumstances surrounding the arrest and prosecution of five suspects in Maiduguri following public concerns over their alleged involvement in thuggery, disturbance of public peace and possession of suspected illicit substances.
The Command, in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, said the suspects were arrested on September 25, 2026, during a routine township patrol around the West End Roundabout area of Maiduguri.
According to the police, the five suspects were apprehended over conduct allegedly capable of causing public disturbance.
During the arrest, officers reportedly recovered 15 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, 100 tablets suspected to be D5, one shisha pot and a pair of scissors.
Police also said two T-shirts bearing the inscription “Tinubu Must Go” were found in the suspects’ possession.
The Command said the suspects were taken through preliminary investigation, during which statements were obtained from them.
Following the initial investigation, the case was subsequently taken before a competent court for prosecution.
Addressing concerns that the arrest may have been linked to political expression, the police stressed that the Nigeria Police Force remains a professional and non-partisan institution.
The Command said it does not discriminate against individuals on the basis of their political affiliation or viewpoint, adding that its actions are guided by the law and established procedures.
“The Command remains committed to the protection of fundamental human rights, the rule of law, due process, accountability and transparency,” the statement said.
The police further explained that taking the matter to court was intended to allow the judicial process to determine the issues based on the facts and evidence presented.
The Command urged members of the public to avoid relying on unverified reports surrounding the case and allow the court to determine the matter.
It reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, impartiality, accountability and the protection of lives and property across Borno State.
