The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on drug trafficking with the arrest of a 63-year-old suspected drug dealer and the recovery of large quantities of substances suspected to be Indian hemp during an intelligence-led operation.
Police operatives acting on credible intelligence intercepted the suspect, identified as Asuquo Etim of Etebi Village in Esit Eket Local Government Area, while allegedly transporting the illicit consignment from Atabong Park toward Esit Eket.
The operation, carried out on Wednesday morning by a special surveillance and stop-and-search team, led to the recovery of two large bags filled with substances strongly suspected to be Indian hemp.
According to preliminary investigations, the exhibits were allegedly handed over to the suspect by a serving soldier for onward delivery and sale in Ibaka, Mbo Local Government Area.
The Command said discreet investigations are ongoing to uncover the wider drug supply network and apprehend all accomplices linked to the illegal operation.
Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to sustain intelligence-driven policing and maintain aggressive operations against criminal elements threatening peace and security in Akwa Ibom State.
He warned drug traffickers and their collaborators to abandon criminal activities or face the full weight of the law, stressing that the state would remain unfriendly territory for criminals.
The Police also appealed to residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information to strengthen the fight against crime across the state.
