By: Abdullahi Inuwa
The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has warned officers against abuse of authority, extortion, negligence and the unauthorised disclosure of sensitive police information on social media.
Azare gave the warning during an emergency strategic security meeting with senior officers of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, as the Command moved to strengthen crime prevention and improve operational efficiency across the state.
The meeting brought together Assistant Commissioners of Police, Divisional Police Officers, tactical commanders, heads of departments and other senior officers to review the security situation and develop strategies for addressing emerging threats.
The Commissioner charged officers occupying command and supervisory positions to demonstrate effective leadership, remain vigilant and ensure swift, coordinated responses to security challenges within their respective areas of responsibility.
He stressed that effective policing required discipline, integrity, diligence and strict adherence to the rule of law, warning that misconduct by personnel could undermine public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
Azare further reminded officers that the fundamental rights of citizens must be respected at all times, insisting that arrests, investigations, searches and other police duties must be conducted in accordance with established laws and procedures.
He specifically cautioned personnel against abuse of power, extortion, dereliction of duty and other unprofessional conduct, directing supervisors to strengthen accountability and ensure that officers under their command discharge their responsibilities appropriately.
The meeting also focused on intelligence-led policing, improved information sharing, strategic patrols and effective monitoring of security flashpoints and vulnerable locations across Akwa Ibom State.
DPOs, tactical commanders and heads of departments were directed to maintain effective communication with their personnel, promptly report security developments and provide adequate supervision to improve operational effectiveness.
Police Enforce IGP’s Social Media Directives
A major highlight of the meeting was the renewed emphasis on strict compliance with the social media policy of the Nigeria Police Force, in line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
Azare reminded officers that the IGP’s directives on social media use remained in force and must be strictly observed by all personnel.
He warned against the unauthorised publication or circulation of official documents, internal communications, operational details, photographs, videos and other sensitive materials on social media platforms.
According to the Commissioner, online activities capable of compromising security operations, violating confidentiality or bringing the Force into disrepute would attract appropriate action under existing police regulations and disciplinary procedures.
He urged all officers to translate the resolutions reached at the meeting into concrete action, strengthen internal accountability and remain responsive to the security needs of residents.
Police Seek Public Cooperation
The Command also called on residents to support ongoing security efforts by providing timely and credible information that could help prevent crime, identify suspicious activities and maintain peace across the state.
It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining law and order, while emphasising that public cooperation remained important to sustaining a safe and peaceful environment.
The statement was signed by DSP Timfon John, Police Public Relations Officer of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, and dated October 23, 2026.
